The Loner's Table
Ebony sat down in her usual seat next to the window with her mp3 player on full blast and listening to Numa Numa, a song that helped her calm down and not feel like such a freak. She poked her spoon into her chili caked with cheese. She took a bite and stared out at the window at the staff putting up the Christmas decorations and the snow falling softly to the ground. The scene reminded her of when she and Cole used to play in the snow together when they were little and gather around the village campfire and sing and tell stories about the Moon Spirit.
She sighed and took another bite, glancing at the growing crowd of hungry creatures. She stiffened nervously when she saw someone walk in that looked extremely familiar. She watched him get his food and sit down with a group of friends that didn't look like they'd be willing to accept her. She didn't care anyway. She was just fine alone.
She quickly finished her cheesy chili and went back for more. She was oddly extremely hungry tonight. She threw on some more cheese and went back to her table after paying. She resumed her seat next to the window and stared out at the nightly wolves that ran gracefully through the forest and school grounds. She remembered her wolf friends that she used to run with. She sighed as she remembered how they were driven off by the vampires and most of them were killed that night. She hasn't seen the pack leader--who got away safely with half the pack--ever since, and she wondered how he was and if he still lived.
She took a bite and pushed it away, wrinkling her nose. The chili started to taste bad. That usually happened to her when she took second helpings of the same food. No one knew why.
She leaned back against her chair, not quite ready to go back to the loneliness of her room yet. She watched the soft snowflakes fall. She glanced back at the familiar face and tried to place it and gave up, staring back out the window. She sighed and grabbed her jacket, running out to walk in the moonlit snow.
